September Earthquake: Wake up call for Kantipurian

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake centered around  Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, near the Indo-Nepal Border
hit on september 18,18.25 NPT as lands across South Asia and China Shook in horror and more than 100 lost their life and another 1000s of them injured, billions of property lost.Sikkim borne the most of the casualty and damage as 100s of houses were crushed to land, road and bridges damaged, landslides in different areas.11 Nepalese lost their lives ,and 100s of house were destroyed in Nepal, mostly in Eastern Part of the nation.Casualties were also reported in neighbouring China and Bhutan while tremors were felt as far away to Bangladesh and Delhi.
Thanks God,the Epicenter of this Earthquake was not around Kathmandu Valley. The last time a major Earthquake hit Kathmandu city back in 1934,locally known as Nabbe saal mahabipat, thousands of kantipuri lost their lives and unimaginable property lost. Now a lot has changed in 80 years since that disaster and sadly not for better.
Kathmandu is now the 11th ranked in high seismic activity zone and should any Major Quake hit Kathmandu or surrounding places, even more than magnitude-6 ,then one can only join their hands together and call "Ram ram ".How prepared are we for the disaster to come?None.Unplanned urbanization, congestion, high seismic activity region and lack of much free space in Kathmandu Valley is a deadly combination, should any major Earthquake hit the Valley.
It will be much worse than 1934 should a similar scale of earthquake hit the valley. In fact,it sends the shiver down the spine to think what might happen on such scenario.Certainly we are far from being prepared for that scenarion.People here have fatalistic approach to life. Now Nepal should made it mandatory to build earthquake resistant buildings and make necessary adjustment to existing structures.Nepal should learn the lesson from Japan.Necessary awareness should be spread to all people to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
It was just a wake up call. We should now wake up and prepare for any forthcoming disaster. It should be on highest of priority of government policy.
